domo-in-a-lunch-box: To the Anon about gifted and ADHD, I am there with you. I have always had a high IQ (genius lvl) but have always struggled with my ADHD. My IQ always seemed to counteract the ADHD in a way that helped get and keep good grades, I still had lack of cleaning, not sleeping, etc. ADHD is sometimes classified as a learning disorder, but at times it's also just listed as a neurological, mental, or behavioral disorder, none of which have a direct impact on how bright someone is.

ihatetobeunique: Hi, I recently found out that my boyfriend has got ADHD, because his bestfriend told me, he didn't want me to be his boyfriend or something(He's a horrible friend). Have you got any helpfull tips, or links so that I can learn a little more about it?
I think it’s sad and kind of odd that his boyfriend has so much stigma attached to ADHD that he thought revealing this to you would run you off.
Talk to your boyfriend about it. He can talk you through what caused him and/or his parents to seek a diagnosis, how he might behave differently, and why he does what he does.
Read through the #actuallyadhd tag on tumblr, but kindly refrain from posting in it unless you have ADHD yourself because we need to keep that space for people who have it. You’ll find accounts of what it’s actually like to live with it and the sort of adventures we have. http://hyperboleandahalf.blogspot.com/ is a blog run by a woman with severe, usually unmedicated, ADHD.
Joey Pigza Swallowed the Key by Jack Gantos is a great children’s book about a boy with ADHD that I’d recommend reading if you can find it at your library. The main character is super impulsive, but he means well.
Go ahead and search for “ADHD” on the web and just surf from site to site for awhile. Most stuff is written for parents, but I’m sure you can adjust.
One last thing -ADHD sometimes comes with poor impulse control. We get feels or ideas and act on them before our brain catches up sometimes, and it’s especially harder for the younger folk with ADHD who haven’t had time to work on self-control as much. This is no excuse for hitting people. Hitting or otherwise hurting people when one is angry is not okay. Sometimes people get frustrated and overwhelmed, but it’s not okay to take it out on other people. People with ADHD are more likely to be bullied than to hurt others intentionally, so it’s more likely that you might have to stick up for your boyfriend sometimes. I just want you to know that ADHD is an explanation, but not an excuse for someone to hit someone else, and if your boyfriend ever hits you it’s just as wrong as if anyone else does it.

elitekids: So, guess who is now officially diagnosed with ADHD mixed type? Yes, it is me. I felt like I needed to share it here because you guys actually encouraged me to go and get it checked out, so thanks. My doctor suggested for me to go on medication and I do consider it. I just realized this message is kind of pointless but hey, I hope you're doing fine!
Congratulations! I’m so glad we could help! I’m doing alright, I had a hectic day and now I’m trying to chew my way through the backlog of asks because you guys are lovely and I don’t want anyone to feel forgotten.

[Go to pick up month’s supply of Ritalin/ “Your insurance only pays for Ritalin for people under age 19”]
When insurances think only kids get ADHD. And then I want to throw things.

Anonymous: is it possible to be "gifted" but also ADD? meaning is is possible to be extremely smart but have ADD? I was in the gifted program and I've always been extremely smart, but I'm not only disorganized but I show all the symptoms of ADD. Even little ones like I can't fall asleep and I have no impulse control. Just wondering since I was told you have to have a learning disability to have ADD.
Lovie, it is quite possible. I’ve known plenty of people who are incredibly bright and at the same time have ADHD. It made it really hard for me to get the resources I needed because I was able to compensate for so long. My district only arranged for evaluations if one failed classes, and I always did well enough on tests to make up for not turning in homework. Now, the notion of “gifted” is a complex and problematic one, the one of intelligence, even more so. But I’m writing this before bed and don’t quite feel up to addressing this. Suffice it to say, you were misled. ADHD is developmental disorder. It may not affect one’s learning directly, but it makes life quite difficult in school. I’ve known people with it that come from under ass segments of the bell curve, as far as intelligence goes. It’s harder to diagnose with people that also have severe intellectual disabilities, and it tends to run under the radar in people society deems more intellectually “capable”, if you will. A learning disability means that for reasons unrelated to intelligence or motivation, one has problems …well, learning, and can often be found (co-morbid) with ADHD, but you don’t always have one if you have the other.

Seriously. I have worked my butt off to make considerations, set time limits, make schedules with smartphone, take meds on time, basically make it so I can be successful despite my ADHD.
Then people doubt you have it. Do you risk it all by stopping the things that help you just to prove it to them? No, you don’t have to prove anything to anyone, just know they are stupid and don’t know your story.

That’s how I’m pretty sure my bf loves me.

True story.

It will take me an extra ten minutes or more to watch a twenty-two minute episode of something if I’m determined to take in every line. I have the same problem with audiobooks and video games with a lot of dialogue.

deerdryad: Hello, I have a quick question. I have ADD and my doctor prescribed me the smallest dose of amphetamine salts, but I had an... adverse neurological reaction and immediately stopped taking it. I talked to my doctor and he said he had never heard of a reaction like mine, so I agreed to try taking it again, only with a half-dose. I'm currently having the same problem after taking this half-dose, so I'm wondering if anyone else has a bad amphetamine salt reaction?
